H.E.F. Fest
On November 5, 2022 the Hampton Education Foundation hosted the first-ever HEF Fest. HEF Fest celebrated our educators throughout Hampton City Schools with live music and a gathering of our Hampton City community to raise private support for HEF's Teacher Grant Program. This program invites our educators to apply for grants to fund their innovative ideas that enhance student learning.
Thank you to our Sponsors who made the evening such a success, helping us raise more than $50,000 toward HEF programs, including our Teacher Grants Program for this academic year.
H.E.F. Fest musical artists included local bands Blue Ribbon and Man Fighting Bear, which has Hampton and Chicago ties. Many artists had Hampton City School ties as alumni, but some special guests artists will be joining the live show including Hampton City Mayor Donnie Tuck, Vice-Mayor Jimmy Gray, and Mike Petters, Executive Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Huntington Ingalls Industries.
The HEF Board would also like to thank:
So many of our Principals at schools who sold tickets. Our Board members, the vendors who came out to participate in our vendor fair, our Hampton City Schools Office of Public Relations and Marketing and Kellie Goral’s team for all the HEF Fest materials, videos and much more.
For Dr. Jeffery Smith, Superintendent of Hampton City Schools, for our entire Hampton City Community of leaders, including the School Board, City Council, and our Representative in the US Congress, the Hon. Bobby Scott.
The Hampton Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth succeed and to supporting the Hampton School System. If you have a question or would like to become involved in helping, please contact us. Currently we are totally run by volunteers on a part time basis. This may mean that our response to you may be delayed but we will respond.
The Hampton Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Our goal is simple. We believe that all children should discover their talents and develop them in a way that improves both their quality of life and everyone they touch.
The Foundation's work to date has focused on improving the classroom environment. We believe the classroom is ground zero for learning during the school day and that the community must provide the best tools and learning resources possible. A partial list of these resources include engaging electronic media, interesting and informative guest speakers, safe and comfortable spaces, timely books and of course, great teachers.
The foundation began in 2001 at the request of Dr. Allen Davis. The Foundation has an excellent Board of Directors who serve without compensation. Day to day activities are managed by one part-time Director.

Strengthen teaching and learning in the Hampton City Schools

We secure time, talent and treasure that gives administration, educators and students a wider array of educational possibilities.

The Michael Canty Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Michael Canty to support a Hampton City School high school graduate(s) to pursue further study or training at an accredited two-year or four-year institution or trade school. This $1,000.00 scholarship …
Purpose:
To provide a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior to pursue further study or training at an accredited two-year or four-year institution or trade school. This scholarship shall be awarded to one Hampton City School graduate who best exemplifies the qualities valued by Mike as well as some of the same qualities that Mike embodied.
The scholarship funds will either be paid directly to the recipient's educational institution of choice or deposited into a Virginia 529 education account for the benefit and use of the award recipient.
Eligibility:
The scholarship recipient must be enrolled in a high school located in Hampton City, Virginia, or a Hampton City resident attending a HCS High School, The Governor’s School or any other public high school, specialty center or high school program established in agreement with the HCS school board.
Criteria:
Mike had an extensive background in education and was passionate about children and youth, and in particular, the underserved, “at risk” youth in the City of Hampton. He touched many lives during his time in Hampton, working at the Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind and Multi-Disabled, as principal of Hampton High School, as the director of InSync Partnerships, and finally as the City of Hampton’s Neighborhood Offices Service Manager. Known to most as just “Mike,” many words have been used to describe Mike – loving devoted family man, good friend, educator, public servant, and all-around nice guy.
Mike had a special place in his heart for those who have to struggle a bit more than most, but who nevertheless find success. His heart was with those who seize opportunities when they present themselves, and despite obstacles, keep focused on their goals. This scholarship honors Mike’s valiant and hard-fought battle with lymphoma.
Access the Application here, including the required essay and one letter of recommendation from a school, community, or faith-based leader.

Additionally there are an abundance of volunteer opportunities throughout the community. And although they may not be tied directly to a school initiative, all of our efforts to improve Hampton work together.
