Our mission is to collect, distribute, analyze and report data in order to build the capacity of schools and departments to improve the achievement of all Hampton students. 

 

We are responsible for all division-wide testing, survey administration and analysis, research studies and program evaluation. We collaborate with schools and departments in providing the Hampton community with a high quality educational program.

Measuring progress is a key part of helping students achieve as well as assessing the strength of our curriculum and instruction.  We also use standardized tests to help identify giftedness in students as well as a need for extra help.  Finally, we administer tests as measures of college and career readiness.  Our major testing initiatives are:

Standards of Learning Tests or SOL's

These tests are taken by all Virginia Public School students beginning at grade 3 and continuing through high school.  They are given in all four core subject areas (Math, English, Science and Social Studies). The tests are created by the Virginia Department of Education, but administered at the local level. For more information please visit the links below:

  • Benchmark Tests are quarterly subject tests given to students in grades 2 through 11 in Hampton City Schools.  The tests give us measures of student progress in the four core content areas and help our instructional staff identify needs for extra help in specific skill areas.

     

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Testing is done in the spring as a measure of course mastery for AP courses in high school. Visit the College Board’s site for students to find out more about Advance Placement. https://apstudent.collegeboard.org

     

  • The NNAT (Naglieri Non-Verbal Aptitude Test) and CogAT (Cognitive Aptitude Test) are given to first and second graders, respectively, to help identify giftedness.

Testing Transparency
At the beginning of each school year, HCS notifies the parents of each student attending any school receiving Title I funds (Title I schools) that the parents may request, and the division will provide (in a timely manner), information regarding any state or division policy regarding student participation in any assessments mandated by 20 U.S.C. § 6311(b)(2) and by the state or division, which includes a policy, procedure or parental right to opt the child out of such assessment, where applicable. 20 U.S.C. § 6312(e)(2)(A). In addition, information on each assessment required by the state to comply with 20 U.S.C. § 6311, other assessments required by the state, and specified information regarding assessments required division wide by the division. 20 U.S.C. § 6312(e)(2)(B) is located on the HCS website as part of the Student's Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.
