HCS administrators publish book

Dr. Jeffery Smith, Hampton City Schools superintendent; Dr. John Caggiano, HCS deputy superintendent; Kate Wolfe Maxlow, HCS director of innovation & professional learning; and Dr. Karen Sanzo, professor of educational leadership program at Old Dominion University, are the authors of a new book entitled Look, Listen, Learn, LEAD: A District-Wide Systems Approach to Teaching and Learning in PreK-12.

As stated in the preface of the book, this is a story about the 5-year-long systems improvement journey undertaken by Hampton City Schools to move from 41% of schools accredited to 100% of schools accredited without conditions. It is not a book about theory; it is a book about what happens when you implement theory systematically to transform teaching and learning.

According to Smith, “The book breaks down the process of what it takes to bring about large-scale educational change that is sustainable. It delves in depth into leadership, culture, curriculum, instruction, assessment and accountability.”

“This book captures a lot of the meaningful work Hampton City Schools staff members throughout our school division have been engaged in during the last several years,” said Caggiano. “We walk through the creation of a variety of highly effective and high-functioning systems that have become a part of the culture of HCS. I take pride in the fact that we are able to share the successful work of HCS staff and students with other educators through this book.”

“It's been a true journey in Hampton City Schools, and I think it really underscores the importance of teamwork,” said Maxlow. “None of this can be accomplished by a single person or a single school. Looking back on all that has been accomplished over the last several years at HCS has been truly humbling to see how hard everyone has worked. It has been an honor to be a part of that work.”

The book is available through Amazon and other bookstores. Proceeds from sales in the first year will go to the school division.

Smith states, “We operate from a place that this is Hampton City Schools’ story, and we are honored to be able to share it.”
