Jemina Emerson

Phenix PreK-8 student wins essay contest with Washington Football Team Reads Program

Jemina Emerson, a fourth grade student at Phenix PreK-8 School, won an essay contest sponsored by the Washington (football) Team Reads program. She was the only elementary school winner. A total of 112 schools submitted entries. Jemina’s prize was 24 tickets for her family, friends, and classmates to a football game on January 2, 2022, and $500 for her classroom. The game was Washington’s final regular-season game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Washington Football team challenged students in Virginia ranging from elementary to high school to submit an essay as they kicked off their inspire change game against the Seattle Seahawks. Through Inspire Change, the NFL supports player-led efforts to engage with team owners, public officials, law enforcement, academic institutions, community partners, and others to identify meaningful ways to strengthen local communities and the greater society.

In her essay Jemina said, “Making/having change could change others’ perspectives of the world. When you inspire people and change, lots of the world lights up with color and brightness. Change takes one and then more people add on to the situation. That one could start with you to change the world. You can inspire others just with voice and action.”

Congratulations to Jemina on her winning essay and thanks for showcasing Hampton City Schools in such a positive way!
