Aberdeen second grader makes her mark as a rapper

Kaidence Colon is not your average second grader at Aberdeen Elementary School. Her alter ego is Johnny James, an eight-year-old rapper and actress. She makes music for hip hop lovers of all ages and her content is age appropriate.

Kaidence aka Johnny James) has eight studio songs and 17 live performances under her belt. Two of these performances were on the city of Hampton’s Round Robin show with Robin McCormick and a performance at a recent Black History celebration that included Mayor Donnie Tuck and council members in the audience. In addition, she filmed her first video that included over 80 local youth. The video can be viewed at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svdbhRBH7og

Johnny says she was greatly inspired by “The Rap Game”, a competitive reality television series, with executive producer Queen Latifah and Jermaine Dupri. Johnny has watched every episode dozens of times, challenging herself to be a student of rap music and hip hop culture. When asked about her commitment to watching and re-watching every episode of the popular rap series, Johnny replied, “I’m studying.”

Johnny James is a committed student of her craft. She was a member of a dance academy and has participated in Pharell’s music camp, “From One Hand To Another”. Her acting includes appearances in a web series and Hampton University’s production of The Wiz. She has also been interviewed on various media outlets.
