Bethel High School’s Arianna Creasman to compete in national Sister Cities competition

 

Arianna Creasman, a 12th-grade student at Bethel High School, has been selected as the local winner of the Young Artists art contest through Sister Cities of Hampton. The theme for this year's contest is "Generation Rescue: Sustainable Water for All." Her piece is titled Blissful Ignorance. In her artist statement, Arianna wrote: 

 

“Plastic pollution, climate change, and oil spills are great threats to our oceans, but another unexpected issue threatens our seas: ignorance. Many people ignore or know very little about what is happening to the ocean's ecosystems. We enjoy our seafood or go to the beach with family and friends with absent minds. My work is inspired by the ignorance we carry on with a hope for an educated future.”

 

Arianna's entry has been submitted to Sister Cities International for the national competition. Christie Liddell is Arianna’s art teacher at Bethel. This is the second year in a row that Arianna's work has been chosen as the finalist. Her winning entry is displayed in the lobby of the Ruppert Sargent Building, 1 Franklin Street.

 

“Her talent, skill, and creativity are evident in her artwork,” said Ai Choo Ashe, teacher specialist for the HCS visual and performing arts.

 

Sister Cities International serves as the national membership organization for Sister City programs in nearly 500 communities, with relationships in over 2,000 communities in more than 140 countries. They provide members with a number of programs to support them in promoting citizen diplomacy, peace, and understanding through exchanges that focus on arts and culture, youth and education, business and trade, and community development.

 

The Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) is an annual contest that encourages youth worldwide to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, photography, and music for both original and reinterpreted pieces. Entries are judged on originality, composition, and theme interpretation.

Hampton City Schools has previously had two national first-place winners and three national honorable mention winners. Good luck to Arianna in this year’s national competition!
