Kecoughtan High - New Science Wing & New Traffic Patterns

Kecoughtan High School (KHS) is breaking ground on Monday, April 25, for a new science wing. When complete, this new wing will be nearly 35,000 square feet and house 15 state-of-the art science classrooms. The additional space will also allow KHS to remove all of their existing portable classrooms and bring all of their students inside the building during the instructional day.

We acknowledge this is a big project and may cause some inconvenience during construction. We ask for your patience, partnership, and understanding as we work through this exciting addition to Kecoughtan.

For the safety of the students, faculty, and visitors, while under construction, no foot traffic or automobile traffic will be permitted at any time on the right-hand side of the school (previously the staff parking/main entrance side).

This will impact traffic patterns (see images below) for the remainder of the school year, as buses, student drivers, parent pick ups and drop offs, as well as faculty and staff parking will be on the auditorium/gym side of the building.

As such, please note the following important changes that will begin on Monday, April 25, and will be in place for the remainder of the school year:

  • All bus riders will be dismissed at 3:09 p.m.
  • All other students will remain in class with their teachers and will be dismissed by announcement after buses have left the parking lot. This includes dismissing walkers, student drivers, and parent pick ups.
  • All parents/guardians should arrive at the school no earlier than 3:15 p.m. for parent pick up/dismissal. Parent drop off and pick up will take place on the auditorium/gym side of the school.
  • All early student dismissals will need to be picked up by no later than 2:30 p.m. (in order for our buses to be able to enter the parking lot).
  • All visitors will park on the auditorium/gym side of the school.
  • All vehicles will be required to make a right-hand turn only when entering and exiting the school parking lot between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • All students and visitors will be required to utilize the auditorium lobby doors as the main entrance. The attendance office and security desk will be stationed in the lobby of the auditorium. Please note that all safety and security procedures will remain in place, as all visitors must present a valid state/government issued ID, and be checked into the Raptor System.

Again, we acknowledge that shifting all traffic to the auditorium/gym side of the building will present inconveniences. However, the outcome of this temporary situation will be a new, innovative, and beautiful science wing. As we adjust, we have partnered with the Hampton Police Division for recommendations and suggestions in the development of these new traffic patterns. Please know we will continue to evaluate our arrival and dismissal procedures. If any changes are needed, we will communicate those changes to our students and families.

Additionally, we recognize that a facility investment of this scope on such a small campus will require changes to Kecoughtan’s current landscape. As such, as we enhance the learning environment, we are also mindful of the natural environment and plan to carefully reinvest in the school grounds, ensuring we are good stewards of our natural habitat. It is our intent to continue to enhance our green space as a part of the addition of the science wing. As an example, for every tree that must be removed, two will be added to the grounds. Also, several benches gifted to Kecoughtan from past graduating classes have been carefully removed and will be relocated on the campus at the completion of the project.

Thank you for your partnership as we work together to provide our students a state-of-the-art environment. Click here to view the plans for the new science wing.
