Students learn about Antarctica research

Fifth grade students from Cooper Elementary School and Mary S. Peake Elementary School are receiving a rare opportunity to learn about experiences of a team of science majors from the College of William & Mary – Virginia Institute of Marine Science as they travel to the Palmer Station in Antarctica to collect samples of marine life.

Antarctica is a land of superlatives – the world’s coldest, windiest, highest, and driest landmass. It is also a homebase for a wide range of oceanographic research by students from the College of William & Mary - Virginia Institute of Marine Science. On February 14 and 15, Maya Thomas joined the students via ZOOM from the U.S. Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula. Thomas shared with students the study of Antarctica's coastal waters and marine life to help better understand, conserve, and manage the polar ecosystem - and to shed light on Virginia's possible climate as each relates to Scientific Inquiry; SOL.5.1b,c,d. Another virtual visit is scheduled for February 22.

On April 10 and 11, 2023, Thomas along with her fellow research team will join Cooper and Peake Elementary to share their research in person with our students.
