Biz Talk- Focus on Fitness Health and Wellness Fair

Chair One Fitness and the Academies of Hampton High School hosted an exciting two-day hands-on experience that introduced students from all four high schools to entrepreneurship principles and health and wellness careers through an innovative fitness experience.

Alexis Perkins-Powell, owner/CEO of Chair One Fitness, toured the four high schools on January 31 and energized students from all grade levels without even having them leaving their seats. Perkins-Powell discussed her professional journey through fitness and how it has afforded her the opportunity to travel and pursue her passion. Through fun music-inspired choreographed fitness, students learned about scientifically created movements designed for people with different abilities while also learning about fitness tools and tips that are useful for students interested in becoming entrepreneurs.

On February 1, students from the academies visited the West Hampton Community Center and participated in a health and wellness fair with fitness vendors. While there, students engaged in conversations with participating businesses to learn about health and wellness methods and even accepted the challenge to compete in push-up contests and hula hoop competitions.

Through this experience, participating students were able to expand their awareness of careers through testimonials and guidance from professionals in the industry. Feedback from teachers and students highlighted the relevance of the opportunity.

“The event was amazing. I really enjoyed it,” said Marietta Mitchell, teacher at Hampton High School. “I walked away with a lot of important information and will be following up with some of the businesses. Thanks for the invite.”

“I learned that you can still stay active even if you have to stay in a chair,” said Antwan Pannell, ninth grade Freshman Academy student from Phoebus High School.

“There are a variety of different fitness activities that you can turn into a business,” shared Talise Gray, ninth grade Freshman Academy student from Hampton High School.
