Superintendent Dr. Jeffery Smith receives the Presidential Citizenship Award from Hampton University

Dr. Jeffery O. Smith, superintendent of Hampton City Schools (HCS), received the Presidential Citizenship Award from Hampton University. The presentation was during the university’s 130th Annual Founder’s Day on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

The Presidential Citizenship Award was established by Hampton University in 1979 to recognize individuals who are positive role models for others and who, through their service to their communities, contribute to the values of decency, dignity, and improvement in the quality of life for others.

Smith said, “It is with enormous gratitude that I accept this award. I am also grateful for the support and impactful leadership of the Hampton City School Board, city council, and the meaningful partnerships with the entire educational community of Hampton City Schools.”

Smith began his tenure as superintendent of HCS on July 15, 2015. Prior to his employment with Hampton City Schools, he served as the superintendent of the Town of West Point Public Schools for seven years.

Under his leadership as superintendent with the Hampton City Schools, academic success is the highest it has been in decades. For the first time in Hampton City Schools history, all of the division’s 32 schools and centers became fully accredited in 2019. Additionally, the school division has strengthened its dual enrollment program with The Virginia Peninsula Community College (previously Thomas Nelson Community College) with students earning 25,443 dual enrollment credits since 2015. The on-time graduation rate has increased from 88% for the class of 2015 to 97.64% for the class of 2022. The dropout rate has decreased from 5.1% for the class of 2015 to 0.62% for the class of 2022. In addition, the Hampton City community has earned the distinction of being the first Ford Next Generation Learning Community in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
