Wanda Mitchell eligible for 2023 Music Educator Award

 

Congratulations to Wanda Mitchell, Hampton High School director of choirs. She has been named a Legacy Applicant for the 2023 Music Educator Award because of her 2022 quarterfinalist status. Legacy Applicants may submit quarterfinalist materials without having to reapply to the first round of the process (thereby jumping straight into consideration for semifinalist status). A total of 207 quarterfinalists and 125 Legacy Applicants are eligible to win the award. The semifinalists will be announced in September.

 

The Music Educator Award, a joint partnership and presentation of the Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum, was established to recognize current educators – kindergarten through college, public and private schools – who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools.

 

Each year, one recipient is selected from 10 finalists and recognized for their remarkable impact on students’ lives. The 10th annual honoree will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the 65th GRAMMY Awards and a range of GRAMMY Week events. The nine additional finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists will receive matching grants. Fifteen semifinalists will receive a $500 honorarium with matching school grants.

 

Mitchell has been a part of Hampton City Schools since 1999. She began her journey at Tarrant (Davis) Middle School and taught there 16 years. She taught at Jones Magnet Middle School for five years, and was at Lindsay Middle School for one year. She is in her seventh year at Hampton High School.

 

Mitchell is a National Board Certified Teacher, and in addition to being the director of choirs, she is the lead teacher for the Academy of Technology and Engineering where she teaches Sound Design and Music Production. She also sponsors the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Drama Club.
