Hampton High School girls basketball team earns VHSL Class 4 state championship

The Hampton High School Crabber girls basketball team earned the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 4 state championship. The team defeated the Pulaski County Cougars 75-63 on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the VCU Siegel Center. The team was led by senior Kennedy Harris, who scored 35 points to help grab Hampton's fourth state title.

The Crabber record under the direction of head coach Shanda Bailey is 25-3.

“Every day the Lady Crabbers repeat the same mantra - impossible is NOTHING . . . earned not given,” said Bailey. “This year they believed it! The year-round training, film sessions, conditioning - these young ladies worked for that one big moment. I’m so proud to be their coach.”

Executive principal Shameka Pollard shared, “We are so proud of our Lady Crabber Basketball Team. These young ladies maintained their focus and stayed true to the goal they set at the beginning of the season. Each of our players, our coaches and our managers all played a significant role in achieving this victory. Through teamwork, determination and discipline, they brought the trophy home to The Hampton High School!”

“Congratulations to the girls basketball team on winning the Class 4 state championship,” said HHS athletic director Yvette Williams. “This win is the culmination of their perseverance and hard work!”
