Syms Middle School students attend FBLA State Leadership Conference

Rianna Platt and Maliq Jones, eighth graders at Syms Middle School, represented their school and Hampton City Schools at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Middle Level State Leadership Conference. The conference was held in Richmond, VA on March 25, 2023.

The students participated in many workshops and the etiquette luncheon training. The students were dressed for success. Syms was the only HCS middle school that participated in the conference.

Riannah says, “I really enjoyed the tie-knot blanket making activity and the professional luncheon we had. We also participated in competitive events, online testing for career exploration and exploring economics. Even though I didn't win, it was a learning experience.”

“I enjoyed all of the workshops I attended,” shared Maliq. “AWomen in Technology presented by ATI (Advanced Technology Institute) in Virginia Beach was a standout. As a boy, I feel like there should be more opportunities for women in the workforce especially in technology. I enjoyed tying knots in a blanket and later donating the blanket for a good cause - children with cancer.”

“I am so proud of them,” shared FBLA sponsor Arnetta Hughes.

Maliq also shared, “I am thankful that I was able to attend. Ms. Hughes is the best.”
