Fourth grade students attend Virginia Symphony Orchestra concert

Each school year, the visual and performing arts department provides a field trip for all fourth grade students to hear the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. For many students, this is their first time going to a concert hall and listening to a live symphony orchestra.

The curriculum aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for music education and is provided by Carnegie Hall. This year the performance was entitled The Orchestra Sings. Students learned about the elements of melody, building on melody: melodic layers and lyrics, and melodies in context: stories, cultural influences, and dance. During the performance, students sang, played recorders, and danced. The program repertoire included: Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven, We Shall Not Be Moved, traditional arrangement by Nathalie Joachim, and, Oye by Jim Papoulis, to name a few selections.

“We are fortunate to have the Virginia Symphony Orchestra here in Hampton Roads. Our annual concert tradition is an impactful way to connect our students to the world around them and demonstrate our diversity and shared humanity,” said Kelly Dee, visual and performing arts curriculum leader.
