Academies of Hampton staff participate in Consortium for Apprenticeships

The Academies of Hampton staff participated in a two-day Consortium for Apprenticeships hosted by ACCELerate Apprenticeships. ACCELerate is a U.S. Department of Labor (grant-funded initiative of the American Association of Port Authorities - AAPA) to expand apprenticeship opportunities in America’s multimodal transportation, distribution and logistics (TDL) connected supply chain. The participants toured several locations in Norfolk to include Lyons Shipyard, AIM Aviation College, and the Port of Virginia. A guest speaker from the Department of Labor joined the team to discuss the importance of preparing youth for apprenticeships and provided helpful resources to support youth career preparation.

Heather Woodruff, the Transportation, Analytics, Information and Logistics (TrAIL) Academy team lead at Bethel High School shared information regarding work-based learning experiences with leadership from the AAPA as well as with state-level leadership from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

Miya Sumpter, the extended learning coordinator from Bethel High School shared, “This was a great opportunity to see how multiple academies can work with the same business partner to create robust interdisciplinary learning opportunities for the students.”

The Academies of Hampton continues to work with community partners to engage educators and students. If you are a business partner who would like to get involved, please contact Jennifer Oliver, Business Partner Integration Administrator, at Joliver1@hampton.k12.va.us or 757-727-8625.
