KHS culinary students learn first-hand from guest speakers

Students in the Kecoughtan High School Introduction to Culinary Arts classes recently had an opportunity to learn from professionals in the culinary field.

CJ Dreyfuss of Alpha Pit Smokers and Jay Choe from Hayashi Sushi and Grill visited the classes to demonstrate their knife and cooking techniques and to talk with students about the “real world” life of a chef/manager in the culinary field. Students also realized how long and hard these professionals work when they asked questions such as, “How did you get started?” and “How many hours do you work in a day?”.

The visit wrapped up with students enjoying smoked stuffed pork roast from Alpha Pit Smokers and fried rice from Hayashi Sushi and Grill.

“It is great to see our community partners come to our school to interact and show our students what they can do beyond the classroom walls,” said introduction to culinary arts teacher Val Wolfe. “The exposure our students received from our community partners is priceless and cannot be found in a textbook or website.”
