Kilgore Gifted Center earns awards at Virginia Theatre Association annual conference

Kilgore Gifted Center earned several awards at the Virginia Theatre Association (VTA) annual conference held on October 26-30, 2022, at the Richmond Convention Center. The Virginia Theatre Association (VTA) five-day conference was titled Making an Entrance, Leaving an Impression. The conference consisted of performances by middle and high school students, competitions such as monologues, set design, and workshops aimed to take the students' acting skills to the next level. This year was Kilgore’s first year in attendance. The group is under the direction of Amanda Galloway, Kilgore’s teacher of general and choral music and theatre arts.

The Kilgore students presented "Badger" by Don Zolidis with 45 students being cast in the play, making KGC the largest middle school group in attendance.

The performance earned a "Gold" rating. It was also selected for a judge's "Best Ensemble" award. Ella Daniels and Bernice Milbrodt were selected for All-Star Cast. Brian Ranger and Dahlia Taylor received best actor awards, the highest honor an individual student can receive.

“All of the students worked extremely hard to prepare for this play both in class and after school,” said Galloway. “The best thing about theatre is that anyone can be involved! Brian, Ella, and Bernice have been in numerous productions. However, this was Dahlia Taylor's first time acting in a show!”
