Hampton Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. donates backpacks to Andrews PreK-8 School students

On Friday, October 22, 2021, 35 top-quality bookbags with lunchboxes, water bottles, pencil pouches, and binders were delivered to Andrews PreK-8 School. The donation was given to the school as a part of a Project Backpack Contest from the Hampton Alumnae Chapter of Delta Theta Sorority, Inc.

Opel Smalls, a Title I reading teacher at the school, entered the contest on behalf of the school through the Delta Box site.

Smalls said, “Within Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., there are a special group of women who have come together to create a monthly gift to sorors known as the Delta Box. The same committee that chooses the Delta Box gifts sponsored a contest for all Title I educators in the sorority to complete an application explaining why/how their school would benefit from the backpacks. The students of Hunter B. Andrews were fortunate enough to win this contest!”

“As of today, we have distributed bookbags almost every day due to broken zippers, rips, or students not having a bookbag at all,” said April Howard, family engagement specialist. “This contribution in addition to others has allowed Andrews staff the ability to ‘fix’ minor problems so that students and parents can focus on strengthening academic skills to be successful throughout the year.”

The Hampton school division is thankful for the many community donations given to students within our schools.
