Brittny Gainey, school social worker, earns doctorate degree

Congratulations to Brittny Gainey, licensed clinical social worker for Hampton City Schools, for earning her doctorate degree. She successfully defended her dissertation, Exploring Virtual Calming Rooms as an Intervention to Address the Mental Health Needs of Students, on October 4, 2022. Her doctoral degree in social work (DSW) was earned with the University of Alabama.

Gainy earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2007 at North Carolina A&T State University. Her Masters in Social Work was earned in 2010 from a joint masters program between NC A&T State University and UNC Greensboro.

Gainey is in her third year with HCS in the department of social work. She is a licensed clinical social worker with 10+ years of experience working with diverse populations. She retains a comprehensive clinical background gained from working in the K-12 educational system, outpatient and community treatment settings, military installations, and non-profit agencies. Gainey is credited with creating an HCS virtual calming room for students and families and was involved in the initiation of The Bridge Program, a school-based behavioral health program implemented by school social workers. She also takes a leadership role in supporting restorative practices for HCS.

Gainey plans to use her new degree to continue to help others and shared this quote, “Professionally I have been blessed to wear many hats; however, what I cling to most is my ability to instill HOPE into others. It has always been my greatest desire, regardless of my professional space, that those whom I engage with leave with a greater sense of hope for themselves, their families, friends, communities, and work. I plan to leverage my degree so that I will not only instill HOPE into others but build the confidence and capacity of my social worker community so they can do the same.”
