Hampton City Schools is awarded a $1.5 million startup grant for an extended school year program

Hampton City Schools has been awarded $1.5 million for the start-up grant for an Extended School Year Program by the Virginia Department of Education. The grant period is from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2024. The 2022 Appropriation Act, signed by Governor Youngkin, provides funding in the fiscal year 2023 for planning and start-up grants to school divisions interested in establishing or implementing extended year or year-round school programs to improve student achievement.

The Extended Enrichment Learning (EEL) programs blend academic and technical skills instruction with work-based learning programs that help our students acquire the skill sets needed to make them competitive in the job market. Content areas such as academic instruction, community-service learning, college and career exploration and preparation, sequenced work-based learning (WBL) experiences, and business-connected relationships provide students the support they need to graduate from high school with the academic knowledge, college credit, technical skills, professional skills, industry-valued certifications, and authentic work experiences that prepare each of them for success in postsecondary education and highly skilled careers.

The grant awarded to Hampton City Schools will support the middle and high schools. The Academies of Hampton continues the transformation of the alignment of experiences that enhance the academic performance outcomes that ensure the qualities of a Portrait of a Hampton Graduate.
