Students participate in first Girls Conference

Approximately 160 students participated in Hampton City Schools first Girls Conference on Saturday, March 27, 2021. The virtual event included guest speakers, giveaways, and door prizes and was sponsored by Hampton High School.

Jessica Freeman, an educator and physicist served as the host of the event. Michele Vinnie, secondary mathematics teacher specialist for Hampton City Schools, served as the keynote speaker. Her theme was "Your life. . . your story. . . what decisions will you make?”
Other guest speakers included Shannon Perry, an entrepreneur who spoke to the students about how they can use their passion, talents, and skills to sustain a living. Psychologist Tawana Fortune showed the participants how they can boost their confidence and reach their goals. Another speaker artist Crystal Johnson encouraged the students to follow their dreams and stay true to their passion. Alicia and Thomiah Dudley spoke about their journey, shared with participants about how to find their purpose, and be their authentic selves.

Each participant received a care package that included a journal, pen, notecard, two movie passes, lip balm, lotion, jacket patch, body butter, face mask, chips, cookies, bath bomb (or make your own soap kit), nail file, nail polish remover, and nail polish.

Students were also eligible to receive awesome door prizes and raffle prizes that included a Bluetooth speaker, ring light, LED lights, County Grill gift card, a copy of the book Getting Past Yourself, a Harvard bundle (shirt and water bottle), and a $50 gift card.

“The 2021 Girls Conference was a beautiful time filled with ladies uplifting other ladies, and a few young men who joined in support,” said Hampton High School principal Shameka Pollard. “Both young girls and mature women left feeling empowered, encouraged and motivated to Walk Toward Our Destiny. I’m fully anticipating the great things we will hear from the young queens that attended as they push forward in their purpose and passions.”
