Bethel High School commemorates 30th anniversary of state football championship; retires Allen Iverson’s football jersey

In a special ceremony during halftime at the Nanesmond River High School vs. Bethel High School (BHS) football game on August 26, 2022, BHS recognized the anniversary of its 1992 state championship and retired team member Allen Iverson’s jersey #10.

Congressman Bobby Scott, Iverson’s family, city council members, school board members, administrators, members and coaches of the 1992 team, and the community were in attendance for the momentous occasion. Additionally, the school unveiled Iverson’s green jersey that will be displayed in the Bruin’s gymnasium, and presented Iverson his white jersey as a keepsake. Congressman Scott presented Iverson with a Congressional Congratulatory Statement.

“It was a special day for Bethel High School and our community to recognize and celebrate Allen Iverson for his outstanding athletic achievements on the football field,” said BHS principal Ralph Saunders. “Allen has been a tremendous support to Bethel for many years. Because of Allen Iverson and Reebok's relationship with Bethel High School, the senior classes of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 have had and will have their college and/or trade school applications paid for.”

The 1992 team, under the director of head coach Dennis Kozlowski, finished their state championship season with a 12-2 record. Iverson was named the 1992 national player of the year and was rated the number one quarterback in the nation.
