Hampton City Schools announces school board attorney

 

During their regular meeting of the School Board on February 15, 2023, Joi Brown was appointed as the school board attorney, effective March 13, 2023. The school board attorney is the chief legal advisor of the Hampton City School Board and provides legal advice to the School Board, superintendent, and division administration. 


Brown is coming to Hampton City Schools from Cordell Law in Virginia Beach where she has served as a litigation attorney since 2017. Prior to joining Cordell & Cordell, Brown practiced family and domestic law, education law, juvenile criminal defense, and was a certified guardian ad litem. Additionally, she was a special education teacher for Richmond Public Schools from 2004 to 2013. Brown has been a guest lecturer for the College of William & Mary School of Law where she spoke to law students on special education law, IDEA, the child study process, due process, IEPs, and least restrictive environments. In 2022, Brown was named a Rising Star in the family law practice area by Super Lawyers, a Thomas Reuters rating service of outstanding attorneys.


She shares, “I am excited to begin working with others who possess the same passion for educating young people and the same desire to see them succeed. I am looking forward to working with other professionals committed to training and educating our future leaders.”


Brown received her bachelor’s in journalism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her teaching licensure from Virginia Commonwealth University. She then earned her Juris Doctor from Regent University School of Law.
