Hampton High School teacher-librarian selected for Virginia Readers Choice Committee

Fanny Limon Duparcmeur, a teacher-librarian at Hampton High School, has been selected to serve on the Virginia Readers Choice (VRC) committee for the next three years. Each year Virginia Readers Choice publishes four lists–primary, elementary, middle, and high–with 10 titles each. Students who read at least four of the 10 titles can vote for their favorite book. As a member of the committee, Duparcmeur will read hundreds of nominated titles in each category and help select the best 10 books for each list.

To be selected for the VRC committee, one must be a Virginia State Literacy Association member and have a background in literature and teaching. Duparcmeur has been a teacher-librarian at Hampton High School for two years. Prior to that, she was a French teacher and a former mechanical and aerospace engineer. Duparcmeur’s application reflected on the importance of reading and of having diverse books to represent every reader. Her application was one of many from potential candidates across the state.

Anyone can nominate fiction or non-fiction books for consideration through a Google form -Nominate a Book for Virginia Readers’ Choice Consideration. Nominations for the 2023-2024 school year are open until March 31, 2023. The criteria for a book to be selected into the VRC list are, but not limited to, the diversity of characters, the appeal to appropriate leveled reader’s interest, topics of interest and appropriateness for the intended audience, and the potential to develop recreational reading beyond the curriculum.

You can read more about the Virginia Readers Choice program here or your school can participate by reading at least four books from the appropriate list and submitting a vote by April 30, 2023.
